HAVE QUESTIONS?
FAQ’s
Here are the answers to everything you might be wondering before we make a little room for your home (and your brain) to breathe.
What exactly is Make Room KC?
Think interior styling, organizing, and home rearranging… with a very practical twist. I come into your home, look at what you already have, and help make your space work (and look!) better. Sometimes that means moving furniture. Sometimes it means organizing a trouble spot. Usually, it’s a little bit of everything. Function and style are both at the top of our priority list.
Do I need to know exactly what to ask you for in regards to project or time?
You sure don’t! Often, it’s the analysis paralysis stage (when you’re stuck and/or overwhelmed) that gives people the push to use my services. The two hour minimum window is a catch all. Each job is different, when each family and household is different. I’m an expert distilling needs and meaningful concepts into individual design.
You don’t have to diagnose your house before I get there.
Tell me what’s bothering you, what isn’t working, or simply, “I don’t know, but please fix it.” We’ll figure out the rest together and go from there.
Do I need to clean before you come?
Please don’t panic-clean for me. I need to see how your home actually functions to understand what isn’t working.
Normal life is welcome here….laundry baskets, backpacks, toys and all.
Are you going to make me get rid of everything?
Absolutely not. I’m much more interested in helping you decide what deserves space in your home than convincing you to own less for the sake of owning less. Sometimes leaning into those “black hole” spaces is the answer. Those areas tell me a lot about how your household functions and gives me hints as to how you can be best helped.
We can declutter where it’s needed, but this is your home - life should happen there.
Will I need to buy a bunch of new stuff?
We shop your house first. The rest is up to you!
One of my favorite parts of Make Room KC is finding a better home for something you already own. If there’s truly something missing, I can help identify what would make the biggest difference - but buying more stuff isn't the starting point, or necessary at all.
Can you help even if I don't have a "designer" house?
Especially then.
Make Room KC isn't about creating a picture-perfect house. It's about making your house feel more intentional, functional and like you again.
What kinds of spaces can we work on?
Living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, playrooms, offices, entryways, garages, bookshelves, closets, awkward corners—or the room you've been avoiding because you don't even know where to start.
If it's taking up physical or mental space, it's fair game.
Can you organize too?
Yes - but I'm not coming in to alphabetize your spice cabinet unless that's what will genuinely make your life better.
I focus on integrating organization into design: all homes need space for the things you actually use, systems your family can maintain, and fewer daily “WHERE IS THE—?!” moments.
Are you an interior designer?
Make Room KC primarily lives somewhere between interior styling, home organizing, rearranging and the very opinionated friend you wish would just come over and tell you where the couch should go.
This isn't full-service interior design, renovation management or architectural planning. It's hands-on help making the home you already have work better.
However, I can provide design direction - if you shoot me an email to get started.
I'll help you create a vision for your space - from layout and paint colors to furniture, lighting, textiles, art and those finishing touches that make a room feel done.
You'll walk away with a personalized plan to get yourself going in the right direction, avoiding the analysis paralysis of building from a blank space.
Will you actually move furniture?
Yes! That’s one of the biggest rewards of a refresh. When rearranging makes sense… we'll move things around and try new layouts rather than just talking about them. I also have an extra set of hands available to help safely (and efficiently) move furniture when needed.
What don't you do?
I'm not a cleaning, mover, junk-hauling, handyman or contracting service. I don't handle repairs, painting, mounting, appliances, furniture assembly or any work that requires a specialized professional.
What I will do is help you figure out what belongs where and make the space feel a whole lot better.
What if we move everything and I hate it?
Then we move it again. Or you can move things as you settle into the changed space.
Seriously. Sometimes you need to see a room differently before you know what feels right. Rearranging is part of the process - not a lifelong commitment to where I put your chair.
How much does it cost?
Make Room KC is $100/hour with a two-hour minimum ($200) to start. Often, this is enough to get you going.
No complicated packages or trying to figure out which level of help your house qualifies for. No tiers, no tears.
How long does an appointment take?
Every house is different, but we start with a two hour minimum. You'd be very surprised what we can accomplish once someone else (me) is there to help make decisions and keep things moving. Most often, around two hours is just right.
Do I have to help?
This is collaborative, but only in the sense that I want to ensure you enjoy the changes being made to your own home. I'm absolutely there (specifically) to take some of the decision-making off your plate.
You can be as involved as you'd like—at a minimum we just need you available for the occasional “keep, move, donate, or why do we own this?”
What if I'm embarrassed by my house?
Please, please, please don't be.
Busy people live in their houses. Kids live in their houses. Life happens in their houses. I'm not coming over to inspect your baseboards or wonder why there's a random pile on the dining room table (or every table). As a previous NICU nurse, I’ve seen it all and know that it takes a lot of bravery to ask for help. You can trust that I’ll hold a compassionate space for whatever kind of help you need.
Also, I'm coming over because the random piles is exactly why Make Room exists.
Is my house too messy / small / unfinished / weird for this?
No. In fact, awkward spaces, unfinished rooms and “I have never known what to do with this area” situations are some of the most fun.
You don't need a different house. Sometimes you just need a different perspective.
What is Sip & Flip?
Exactly what it sounds like: we grab a drink, put on some music and start flipping your space around.
It's the lighter, more social side of Make Room KC—and yes, I'll send you a little Sip & Flip menu beforehand. The sip's on me. You already did the hard part by asking someone to come help.
What's the goal when you leave?
Not perfection. Just momentum and hopefully a lightbulb moment for you.
I want you to walk back into the room later and think, “Oh. This makes so much more sense.”
A little prettier. A lot more functional. Less visual noise. Fewer decisions hanging over your head.
Basically: more room to live.
